About This Project
Located on a quiet South Melbourne street, in a precinct that has undergone continuously intensifying urban development. The Town Hall Apartments utilisers the shell of an historic Art Deco hotel to elegantly wrap and to an extent, disguise a residential block of 11 apartments.
The art deco language has been used as a catalyst to inform the new. Architectural elements have been derived from the tripartite order that was used to inform the buildings original art deco façade.
For example, the integration of the new facades have been articulated to resonate the art deco tripartite motif featured on the main façade and, crafted glazed sections reference the building’s art deco heritage adding to the architectural exuberance typical with the art deco style.
The building will incorporate contemporary materials and technologies that when combined create new and appropriate architecture while resonating the established order, a key attribute that strongly influenced Art Deco philosophy.
